What is AWAKE?
The American Sleep Apnea Association (ASAA) organizes a network of support groups known as AWAKE (Alert, Well, and Keeping Energetic), composed of hundreds of mutual help support groups in nearly 50 states for people affected by sleep apnea.
McKenzie-Willamette Sleep Solutions Center is a member of this network and holds support meetings four (4) times per year. Founded in 1988, the ASAA AWAKE Network is committed to patient-centered meetings that local AWAKE members plan and implement. Regularly scheduled meetings are led by an AWAKE coordinator. Guest speakers are often invited to address the group. Topics may include advice on complying with Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy, legal issues affecting those with sleep apnea, weight loss and new research findings.
Armed with knowledge about sleep apnea and methods of treatment, members of the ASAA AWAKE Network have a better understanding of the nature of their disorder and their prescribed treatment. Thus, they are more likely to take appropriate steps in managing their health care. Network members are also apprised of the latest developments in the sleep field. As informed individuals they can play an important role in educating the public about this common disorder. Participating in the AWAKE Network, patients and their families share peer support and coping mechanisms, as well as help reduce the sense of isolation that may accompany this sleep disorder.
The ASAA AWAKE Network yields a beneficial experience for sleep center staff and home health care companies as well as patients. Health care professionals benefit from the educational aspects and additional opportunities for patient follow-up. Participating in AWAKE encourages better communication among patients, sleep center staff and home health care. This furthers the Network’s goal of advancing better health for people with sleep apnea.
The next McKenzie-Willamette AWAKE support group meeting will be held in April 2010.
