The Day of Surgery
 

The Day of Your Surgery

  • No aspirin products, herbal supplements or vitamin E for one week before surgery.
  • No NSAIDs — Motrin, Advil, Ibuprofen or Aleve — for two days before surgery. Tylenol is okay to take.
  • The day before your surgery verify the time with your physician's office.
  • No solid food or dairy products (including coffee creamer) after midnight the night before your procedure. You may drink clear liquids such as water, cola, apple juice, plain tea, Jell-O or black coffee (1 cup) until 3 to 6 hours before your procedures. Details by age group follow these bulleted items.*
  • Take ONLY your routine morning PRESCRIPTION medications with a sip of water before you come to the hospital unless otherwise directed.
  • Please leave your jewelry (including body piercing) and valuables at home. Wear clean, comfortable clothing appropriate for procedure.
  • It is important to take two cleansing showers as instructed.
  • Please do not wear makeup, lotion, hairspray or scented products the morning of surgery.
  • On the day of surgery please bring a list of your PRESCRIPTION medication, noting the date and time last taken.

  • Check in at the Emergency Department entrance 2 to 2 ½ hours before your surgery time.

Guidelines for Eating & Drinking Pre-Surgery to Ensure Maximum Hydration

Pre-surgery fasting for:

PEDIATRIC patients

  • infants may have breast milk up to 4 hours prior to surgery.
  • newborn to 6 months
    • Milk/solids 6 hours prior to surgery.  Clear liquids* 2 hours prior to surgery.
  • 6 to 36 months
    • Milk/solids 6 hours prior to surgery.  Clear liquids 3 hours prior to surgery.
  • older than 36 months
    • Milk/solids 8 hours prior to surgery.  Clear liquids 3 hours prior to surgery.

ADULT patients

  • Milk/solids 8 hours prior to surgery.  Clear liquids 3 hours prior to surgery.

*Clear liquids include:

  • cola, apple juice, black coffee or tea, clear Jell-O, without fruit.
  • NO dairy products, pulp juices, like orange juice, lemonade or V8.
