Under the medical leadership of cardiologist Jay Chappell, M.D., this group of talented physicians have performed many advanced technologies at the Heart Center. 

  • 2008: Dr. Samuel Lau performed the first percutaneous closure of a patent foramen ovale (PFO)in Springfield.  
  • 2009: In Lane County, the COGNISTM cardiac resynchronization defibrillator (CRT-D) was first implanted at McKenzie-Willamette.
  • 2009: Dr. Jay Chappell was the first area cardiologist to implant a pacemaker equipped with wireless technology. The device offers automatic test results and complete diagnostics that can be monitored remotely for regularly scheduled checks, and alerts the physician of any patient or device abnormalities.

Jay Chappell, M.D, FACC

Dr. Chappell attended medical school at University of California Davis, completed his residency and internship at the Virginia Mason Medical Center, and his fellowship at Geisinger Medical Center. He has been practicing cardiology in the Eugene-Springfield area since 1990. He was named the Medical Director of the McKenzie-Willamette Heart Center in 2006.

Samuel Lau, M.D., FACC

Dr. Lau attended Creighton University for his undergraduate and medical school degrees. He trained in internal medicine at Creighton, then served four years in the U.S. Air Force as an internist. He then completed his fellowship in general and interventional cardiology at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. He has been serving patients in the Eugene-Springfield area since 1999.

Cameron Ramsay, M.D.

Dr. Ramsey attended Temple University School of Medicine. He completed his internal medicine internship and residency at Boston University Medical Center. His general Cardiology fellowship was completed at University of Massachusetts Medical Center and North Shore-Long Island Jewish Medical Center is where he completed his Interventional Cardiology Fellowship. Dr. Ramsay is a native Oregonian
